from Armelagos G. et al. 2005. Evolutionary, historical and political economic perspectives on health and disease. Social Science and Medicine 61(4):755-765. all the reading i have to do for school is depressing
i figured it out, though, do you remember the scenes with president snow’s granddaughter, when she is talking about how she wears her hair in braids like katniss because all the girls are doing it, and when she, in response to peeta and katniss hugging during the games, says, “i hope someone will love me that much one day!”, because i think that article is what happens if you assume that the perspective of president snow’s granddaughter is the perspective all teenage girls have to the hunger games
When you look to the wish-fulfillment narratives for female protagonists, however—Twilight’s Bella Swann, for example, or The Hunger Games’ Katniss—things get more complicated. These heroines are typically required to not want, or to feel unworthy of, all the fabulous rewards they’re constantly getting. Bella Swann is instantly popular at school, two incredibly gorgeous boys are in love with her, and she eventually becomes wealthy, superpowered and immortal to boot. And yet her first-person narration constantly states that she is a lowly, plain-looking klutz who just doesn’t understand why anybody loves her. In order to get all these rewards—in order to deserve them—the female wish-fulfillment figure needs to believe that she is inherently undeserving.
Similarly, every bit of wish-fulfillment Katniss Everdeen experiences is accompanied by affirmations of how little she wants it. She’s too cool to care about pretty dresses—but all of her dresses are so incredibly pretty that everyone gasps and applauds when they see her, and she continually receives compliments on how gorgeous she looks. Celebrity is stupid and corrupt—but Katniss is the biggest celebrity in Panem, so universally beloved that people start a revolution in her honor. Katniss has nothing but contempt for those snotty, wealthy Career Tributes, who kill people to gain social status—but they all die, and she therefore gains wealth and social status.
— i mean i don’t want to link to it or discuss it but this is one of the more disastrously, comprehensively stupid readings of the hunger games that i have ever encountered.
wow the hunger games has gone over an grown adult’s head
yes yes katniss was totally getting all her wishes fulfilled when they dressed her up and paraded her around under the threat of murdering her family before trying to murder her, again
it’s like, i know you think teenage girls are stupid but actually they are clearly much smarter than you, they probably actually understand you are not supposed to desperately want to be in katniss’s position, oh my god
my favorite scene in catching fire was when caesar is talking about the proposal and he flashes an image of katniss and peeta proposing and he is in the background pointing, delighted with his mouth open huge. is there a picture of this, i want it on my blog.
fyi i promise if i am following your abuser or a friend of your abuser if you tell me i will get really mad at them and stop interacting with them, sometimes i keep following people for a while where i will just get really mad every time they post until i eventually unfollow them, but if you want me to i will also immediately unfollow them
UGH, GOD, stupid neighbors across the street and two doors down, YOU ARE FUCKING BLASTING YOUR HORRIBLE MUSIC AND I HATE YOU, IT’S LOUD ENOUGH TO BE A NUISANCE FROM THAT DISTANCE it’s like 3 am, one time i was at a party with jean and these neighbors asked jean if their stupid loud music bothered them (it does) and jean was awkwardly like “uh, um, not really” and looked at me in hopes i’d say something but i was tuning everybody out and knitting and did not find out this happened til later
clarification on “weird unasked for chivalrous favors”: once i saw him bully a girl into taking his jacket because she “looked cold,” he refused to let her decline and argued with her until she took it
i had a dream about this certain dude i know who i used to be friends with in freshman year but since stopped after i got sick of him calling me “trick” and doing weird un-asked for chivalrous “favors” and visibly losing respect for every girl he wants to sleep with
while on one hand i am pleased he has been living in a complete shithole, he still continues to have a friend group largely made up of lesbians bc they are the only women he respects bc he knows they will not sleep with him, and i’m just like
hammerduke said: i know EXACTLY who youre talking about and once she spent the entire class talking about the correct way to move your hips for the hula dance (and was unable to adequately explain it in the span of that hour)
when i was in high school i had a science teacher who i couldn’t stand, she was so disorganized that you literally could not follow her train of thought, once my parents went to open house and came back being like “wow we thought you were exaggerating but i guess not” and anyways i was thinking about this and reading the beginning of this and it reminded me how she used to come up behind girls in my class and start like, playing with our hair, she only did this to me like once or twice but it was so supremely uncomfortable and i saw her do this to numerous other classmates
anyway her lectures were so pointless that i used to spend them writing out lucksmiths lyrics from memory in large, perfect cursive because i figured practicing my cursive was a way better use of my time, and now i’m really good at cursive and also once i ran into her a couple years after i had her and she was like “i remember you used to take notes in such beautiful cursive!” and i was just like “yeah, lol, notes”
this is going to maybe be appalling to those of you who also knit, but i have a long-standing history of Not Believing In Gauge Swatches and somehow magically making sweaters and gloves that fit well anyway, SOMEhow. but anyway i changed my mind about gauge swatches because i realized they’re like a tiny version of a sweater you will make. adorable! i get it.
finestdaze said: i have a counseling job which doesn’t fall into any of these, they “prefer” experience and a college degree but don’t require them because of ideas of wanting the staff to reflect the community being served, etc. not ideal but also doesn’t feel evil
yeah i think this is more like option 1., or at least in the spirit of it, cause those tend to be more into community focus (not evil) i think i actually know what job you work!
if you want to be a counselor, why would you not get certified at least?
some jobs i was looking at allow you to get certified after you have a job/while you are doing training, (or i think include this as part of training??) i was under the impression this is how it Usually Works but i think i might be wrong
ok so i’ve been looking for jobs, specifically counseling jobs, and i have come to the conclusion they are all in one of three categories:
jobs that want people with a high school degree or GED, certification, and experience
jobs that want recent college graduates
jobs that require a master’s degree and maybe also experience
anyway 2. is probably the easiest for me to get but i can’t help feeling all those jobs are going to be evil??? they all seem really evil, like they don’t train you enough and put you in positions you aren’t competent enough to handle??? idk ugh maybe i should get certified or a master’s degree
