hey so i think the conference went really well! at the one in the morning, one of my old teachers from GHP (meaning she knew me from nerd camp when i was 17) was there seeing her friend’s session who was in the same session as me so she got to see me! i was on a panel with a professor and two phd students. afterward my former GHP teacher was super sweet to me and told me my presentation was indistinguishable from a phd presentation, ahhhh! she kept being like, “you’re already there” and telling me i was smarter than some people she knew with a phd i feel like i am bragging now but it was realllllly sweet of her
this lady who i took a class with also by chance was there and later came to my afternoon workshop because she said my presentation made her want to learn more about zines. also one of my friends who i have known since elementary school but don’t see very often sat in on my presentation because she was volunteering!! daniel and my parents came too. i wish i could have invited everyone for real but it was nice to give a presentation to at least some people who i knew! my advisor came in right when i was through (she had to pick up the keynote speaker) but apparently she heard nice things about me.
the zine workshop went good too! i was glad i was doing it with missy instead of doing it alone. we managed to give a short presentation, have the group make a zine page, and get it copied and collated in just around an hour and fifteen minutes. the topic we chose was “first experiences with feminism”
while missy was printing the zines i had to entertain the audience for like 20 minutes and i think i did ok but i maybe should’ve planned better. i took some questions and talked a little about my research. at one point my dad asked me how i define feminism and apparently my former professor who was chairing the session thought this was way funny because when i went to talk to terri (who organized) afterwards the first thing she said was “i heard it went well! i heard your dad asked you to define feminism.”
also there was delicious lunch (tacos) and delicious 5 pm snacks (chocolate and pineapple punch omg) and erin lovett played music which was neat! the art exhibit was also really cool and i got to hear the artist speak about it a little; my favorite pictures were about black girls’ experiences with girl scouts.
it was a really positive experience as my first time presenting i feel like! i think i was pretty well received? it was nice to see a lot of my old teachers too.
