No “boys” and “girls” at gender-neutral preschool in Sweden

A preschool in Sweden wants to eliminate gender bias by referring to children as “friends,” instead of girls and boys, and avoiding gender-specific pronouns such as “him” or “her.”

At the taxpayer-funded “Egalia” preschool in Stockholm, which opened last year for children ages 1-6, boys and girls play together with a toy kitchen, which is located next to the Lego bricks, the Associated Press reports.

They read books featuring gay and lesbian couples, single parents and adopted children, instead of fairy tales such as “Cinderella” or “Snow White,” which are rife with gender stereotypes.

School staff try to avoid masculine and feminine references in their speech, for example by not using the Swedish pronouns “han” or “hon” for him or her, and instead using the genderless word “hen,” which doesn’t formally exist in the Swedish language.

“Society expects girls to be girlie, nice and pretty and boys to be manly, rough and outgoing,” teacher Jenny Johnsson told the AP. “Egalia gives them a fantastic opportunity to be whoever they want to be.”

This is so amazing.

“Hen” is a Swedish gender neutral pronoun that is rather unknown at the moment. I want a change to that! This is for a project in school. Similar pictures are coming up.

i am interested. (so interested that after reading this i started singing grease… tell me more, tell me more)

i am ALL ABOUT swedish and gender-neutral pronouns!

swedish teenagers respond to pornography

so in the process of doing research for my women’s studies debate on pornography, it came to my attention we needed a total of sixteen super-academic sources. we did not have those, and hastily tried to find some. in this process, i found a super-endearing study on swedish teenagers and their views on pornography entitled “lust, love and life: a qualitative study of swedish adolescents”

this featured a number of extremely endearing interviews. here are some excerpts:

If you have poor self esteem…and don’t dare to date girls in real life….Then, if you are drinking beer and looking at porn instead … and get the idea that you just can go out and fuck a girl. Then you will end up with a thick ear! (Male interview, aged 18 years)

i would hate to end up with a thick ear.

We didn’t learn that much in school about sex educa- tion, so one has to look in porn magayyyyyzines. But the only good thing is that you might learn a new way of having sex, kind of…. (Male interview, aged 18 years)

R: How old were you when you first got in contact with porn?
M21: I don’t remember. Seven years or something [laughing]!
(Everyone starts laughing) M2:    No, but 13–14 maybe … M3: I was 10–11. M8: It depends if you had it [porn] at home or not. M1: Or when you discovered your ‘‘dick’’!
R: When did you do that then? M4: He has not done it yet [laughing]! (Male focus
group, aged 17–20 years)

love you, sweden
